Your questions, answered

What is a third party claim?

A claim made against the other driver’s insurer, not your own. If the accident was their fault, their insurer pays for your recovery, your replacement vehicle and your repairs. We manage all three for you.

Claim on your own policy instead and you pay your policy excess, your no-claims takes the hit, and you get whatever courtesy car your cover allows. Claim against theirs and none of that happens. Nothing to pay upfront on an eligible non-fault claim.

When can I make a third party claim?

Two things need to be true.

It was not your fault. Fault comes down to who was careless: who ran the light, pulled out, or went into the back of someone. Insurers look at what the road rules say, what witnesses saw, what the police recorded, what the damage shows, and what any dashcam caught.

The other driver is insured. Their policy is what pays. If they were not insured, or drove off, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau steps in instead. Ring us and we will tell you which route your claim takes.

How do I prove it was not my fault?

The evidence you gather in the first ten minutes does most of the work. Get:

  • Photos of both cars, the road and the damage, before anything moves
  • The other driver’s name, registration and insurer
  • Names and numbers of anyone who saw it
  • Dashcam footage, saved before it overwrites
  • The police reference, if they attended

Do not apologise at the scene, even to be polite. Insurers treat sorry as an admission.

Do I have to tell my own insurer?
Yes, that it happened. That is a notification, not a claim. Nothing goes on your policy and your no-claims stays as it is.
What if they say it was my fault?
Do not agree at the scene, and do not apologise. Send us what you have: photos, dashcam, the names of anyone who saw it. If the at-fault insurer challenges your claim, we gather the evidence and fight your corner.
What if the other driver is not insured?
The Motor Insurers’ Bureau exists for this. It pays out for drivers hit by uninsured or untraced drivers, on its own rules and timescales. Ring us and we will tell you whether your claim is one we can take on or one for the MIB.
What is the catch?
We recover our costs from the at-fault driver’s insurer, which is why it costs you nothing. If fault cannot be established, you could be asked to cover the hire charges. So we tell you on the first call whether your claim is one we would take on.

Their insurer has a claims department.

It works for them.We work for you.

How it works

  1. Tell us what happened. One call, or your reg. That is your bit done. On average we answer the phone within 1 minute.
  2. Your dedicated UK claims handler. A main point of contact who knows your claim, supported by our UK claims team.
  3. Recovery and onward travel. We aim to have recovery with you within 90 minutes, nationwide, and help arrange onward travel for you and your passengers.
  4. A like-for-like car, van or motorbike. Subject to eligibility and availability, for as long as yours is off the road.
  5. Repaired, or fairly valued. If your vehicle can be repaired, we arrange everything with an approved repairer. If it is written off, we do not take a percentage of your settlement. Repairs use new parts, through repairers working to BS 10125. The repair work comes with a lifetime guarantee, with the cover and conditions explained before work begins.
  6. The at-fault insurer pays. Not you. If they challenge your claim, we gather the evidence and fight your corner.
